    Subsidising renewable energy

    32% approved of the Government’s decision to phase out subsidies for renewable energy by 2020 and 41% disapproved.

    Those more likely to approve were Liberal National voters (47%) and men (40%).

    62% of Greens voters and 52% of other voters disapproved.

    Impact on prices

    Only 16% think that the Government’s energy plan will reduce power prices. 31% think the plan will increase prices and 31% think it will make no difference.

    Among Liberal National voters, 25% think it will reduce prices, 22% increase prices and 31% make no difference.

    48% of those aged 55+ think it will make no difference.

    Party trust

    More than half either think there is no difference between the parties or don’t know who they would trust more to handle any of these energy issues.

    For those who made a choice, the Labor Party was more trusted to reduce carbon emissions from power plants (+12%), encourage investment in renewable energy (+10%), stand up to the big power companies (+6%) and develop a modern power system that is clean and smart (+5%).

    There was no significant difference in preference for either party on reducing power prices or ensuring a reliable power supply.

    Those most likely to approve were Greens voters (88%), Labor voters (73%), aged under 35 (74%) and university educated (73%).

    74% approve of the Federal Government continuing to provide incentives for the development of renewable energy and 10% disapprove. 16% don’t have an opinion.

    62% approve of the Labor Party commitment to a target of 50% renewable energy by 2030 and 18% disapprove. These figures are little changed since the question was asked in February.

     

    A very high majority of Labor voters (82%) and Greens voters (80%) approve.

     

    Liberal/National voters were split but more likely to approve (52%) than disapprove (27%).

    Doing enough about energy

    61% (down from 71% in February) think the Federal Government is not doing enough to ensure affordable, reliable and clean energy for Australian households and businesses and only 15% think they are doing enough. 19% (up 5%) don’t know.

    56% of Liberal National voters think they are not doing enough and 22% think they are doing enough.
