    Spending on anti-terrorism

    Q. Do you think the Australian Government should be spending more or less on anti-terrorism measures or is current spending about right?

    28% think the Australian Government should be spending more on anti-terrorism measures and 19% think they should be spending less – 36% think the current spending is about right.

    Those most likely to support spending more were aged 55+ (40%), Liberal/National voters (39%) and those who had not completed secondary education (38%).

    Those most likely to support spending less were aged under 25 (27%), Greens voters (37%) and those with university education (26%).

    Surrogacy

    Q. Surrogacy entails a woman agreeing to bear a child, which is then transferred to other persons. Do you approve or disapprove of surrogacy in the following circumstances?

    A majority approve of surrogacy where the woman bearing the child is a close friend or relation and is not paid (69%) and where the woman bearing the child lives in Australia and is paid (58%) but disapprove if the woman bearing the child lives in another country and is paid (33% approve/51% disapprove).

    A majority of all demographic and voter groups approved of surrogacy where the woman bearing the child lives in Australia – whether paid or unpaid.

    For situations where the woman bearing the child lives in another country and is paid, those most likely to approve were aged under 45 (41%), Greens voters (53%) and those earning $1,600pw (44%). Those most likely to disapprove were aged 55+ (67%) and Liberal/National voters (58%).

    54% of respondents disapprove of the job Tony Abbott is doing as Prime Minister – down 4% since the last time this question was asked in July – and 37% approve of the job Tony Abbott is doing (up 3%). This represents an improvement in net rating from -24 to -17.

    80% (up 3%) of Liberal/National voters approve of Tony Abbott’s performance, with 12% (down 4%) disapproving. 89% of Labor voters and 86% of Greens voters disapprove of Tony Abbott’s performance.

    By gender men were 40% approve/51% disapprove and women 32% approve/57% disapprove.

    The most important environmental issues were protecting the Great Barrier Reef (91%), protecting endangered species (87%), cutting air and water pollution (87%) and protecting native forests (86%). All issues were thought to be important by over 70% of respondents.

    The ranking of issues was similar across party voting groups except for –

    • Addressing climate change, which was rated more important by Labor voters (84%) and Greens voters (85%) but lower by Liberal/National voters (57%).
    • Strengthen environmental protection laws, which was rated more important by Labor voters (84%) and Greens voters (88%).

    Population growth, which was rated more important by Liberal/National voters (77%).
