    Trust in safety of personal data

    Q. How much trust do you have in the government and telecommunications companies and internet service providers to store retained personal data safely and in a way that would prevent abuse?

    68% say they have little or no trust in the government and telecommunications companies and internet service providers to store retained personal data safely and in a way that would prevent abuse and 26% have a lot or some trust.

    Those with highest levels of trust were Liberal/National voters (45%) and people aged 65+ (44%).

    49% of respondents agreed more with the statement that “Governments are increasingly using the argument about terrorism to collect and store personal data and information, and this is a dangerous direction for society “ and 37% agreed more with “Governments having access to personal telephone and internet information is necessary to protect society from terrorist or criminal actions”.

    A majority of Liberal/National voters (62%) agreed more with “Governments having access to personal telephone and internet information is necessary to protect society from terrorist or criminal actions” while all other voter groups agreed more with the alternative statement.

    55% of those aged 55+ also agreed more with the first statement and a majority of all other age groups agreed more with the second.

    Respondents were more likely to describe the Government’s handling of the issue of asylum seekers as “responsible” and “fair” but also as “too secretive” and “just playing politics” (all 45%). 26% describe their handling of the issue as “too soft”, 29% as “too hard” and 30% as “cruel”.

    Liberal/National voters were most likely to think the handling was “fair” (76%) and “responsible” (75%).

    Labor voters were most likely to think the handling was “too secretive” (69%) and “just playing politics” (65%).

    Greens voters were most likely to think the handling was “too secretive” (75%), “stubborn” (72%) and “unethical” (69%).

    Of those aged under 35, only 23% thought the handling of the issue was “balanced” and 29% thought it was “fair”.

    51% approve of sending unarmed Australian Federal Police to secure and search the Malaysia Airlines crash site and 64% approve sending armed forces. However, only 26% approve sending armed forces without the agreement of the Ukraine Government – and 60% disapprove.

    Liberal/National voters were more likely to approve of each action – 57% approve of unarmed forces, 71% approve armed forces and 37% approve armed forces without agreement.

    There was a significant split on gender on approval of sending unarmed forces – 58% of men and 42% of women.

    More than eight in ten think that Australia has good relationships with USA, New Zealand and United Kingdom. About two thirds think relationships with China and Japan are good.

    There were mixed opinions on the relationship with Indonesia (31% good/30% poor) and only 10% thought our relationship with Russia is “good”.
